Working on a July Launch Date for the Optimist

My brothers and I have slowed our building of the Optimist down to a crawl. However, my brother Darren has taken the lead and wants the first boat to launch on July 4th.

He has purchased sail, tiller and extension, blades (rudder, centerboard), gudgeons from APS - Annapolis Performance Sailing.

To protect the chine he has laid down a 2 inch strip of fiberglass cloth in simple-clear polyester resin. It should provide a bit of resistance to any "hard blows" on rocks that make up the shore of our part of Lake Ontario.

Polyester resin is quick to harden and very easy to sand. It costs about half the price of shipping epoxy to us. It's just a short drive to the auto parts to pick up a quart.

Joinery wood working hand tools

All of the quality tools that are on the work bench can often be found as used items in jumbles and auctions.

Click on the image to enlarge it.

With todays easy access to so called power tools many wood working tasks are done with machines.

They are less suited for the type of work in the picture, the job is to rebate the teak (plantation grown) grate to enable it to fit on the new okoume / epoxy shower tray.

This type of work can be very satisfying ,it is not difficult work and saves the high cost of the power tools and the related cutters, its a whole lot safer too (smile)

Power tools such as a belt sander do have their place of course.

Working with International Paints

The boat in the picture was painted from new with International Paints, its a system which has proved its worth many times over in the sixteen years since the boat was painted.

The boat is being given a service and the sheet winch pods are having the original teak cover board removed. The teak was the cause of a leak and really the Lewmar STA 58 and 44 winches, which are only a few years old will look a lot nicer on the clean white Interthane 990 polyurethane gloss top coat than on the un varnished teak.

This pod was refurbished and then coated with our 816 epoxy and 205 cure agent, some glass cloth went into the assembly to add strength as well.

The paint system is Intergard 276 white epoxy primer, six coats with a small foam roller due to wet sanding between the layers, then Interthane 990 top coat, which was three coats applied with a spray gun.

The winches will be refitted next.

With the job done its time to remove the teak cover board on the Port side of the boat and refurbish that side so things look the same.

The idea is to have a cleaner looking cockpit area!
