c 1839 Minnesota Historical Society Paddle
Here's a beautifully carved paddle from the Minnesota Historical Society Collection found via this page on the Fur Trade.

Some research on the MHS site revealed the following details:
Wood paddle has a long slim tapering blade. The flat grip has a concave indention at its base and elaborate carving on its remainder. Carved design includes a curved cross, a shield with a diamond and scroll band, and diamond shapes filled with cross-hatching. There are also the carved initials "W. D.", which may not be original. Donor states that the paddle was found near Stillwater, Minn., following a battle between the Ojibwa and Dakota, ca. 1839. Paddle is purported to have belonged to a voyageur.

Design 2601 R P I C
R.P.I.C. stands for Riverine Patrol Interdiction Craft. The object was to design a small, fast military craft that could be launched from a flying Lockheed Hercules C130 cargo plane with 6 crew members onboard at an altitude of 10', survive and deliver a top speed of 45 knots for rapid deployment where needed.
Here is the general arrangement of the aircraft.
Here's the cross section showing the launch parameters.
Originally a modified stock production boat with twin outboards (note the sketch above still shows that boat) was to be used but it was proven that the boat couldn't handle the slamming load of being dropped out of a plane. This new boat was then designed. In addition to withstanding slamming loads, G-forces sustainability for the crew members (seat and cockpit sole design) was engineered as well as light armament protection (Kevlar panels).
Power was provided by a single Seatek 6-4V-9D marine diesel generating 600 bhp at 3,150 rpm coupled to a Hamilton waterjet.
Here is the general arrangement plan.
LOA 27'-5"
LWL 23'-7"
Beam 9'-2"
Draft 2'-0"
Displacement 10,725 lbs

c 1878 Maliseet Paddle
While searching through Artefacts Canada's site, I came across a fascinating paddle, apparently located at the Fredericton Region Museum (formerly York Sunbury Museum) in Fredericton, New Brunswick. It's been dated to at least 1878, made from maple, and is ornately carved with a stylized fiddlehead design. The description mentions that it was presented to Col. John Saunders (1792-1878), who served as High Sheriff of York County for many years and befriended many local Maliseet. The grip is incised with the builder dupskodegun (pictorial signature or private mark) and is made of curved motifs with a stylized depiction of fiddleheads, apparently a very common design of the time. Below are some closeups of the blade and grip area. For the full Artefacts Canada citation, click here.
