The Dix 43 center cockpit on launch day
This was of course a big day, in many ways the day before was an even bigger day as the keel was fitted to the boat, would the 14 x 20mm keel studs line up with the holes in the boat? Would the 4 fuel tank pipes fit, lots of questions.
Thats John Holmes standing on the aft deck of the boat, John is a good friend and was crew on our trip
to Salvador,Bahia, Brasil on another boat I took over some years back. John took over the job of propping the boat up for me the day before once it was on its keel, thanks John!

The hull of this yacht was constructed mainly by one person in a six week time span period.
Plans are available from www.dixdesign.com we can supply a bulkhead kit set. The coach roof was a custom design for this boat.

Westchester Medical Center Childrens Hospital Sailing Neighborhood

Special projects - In 2004 we were contacted by the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center (New York) about designing a special "sailing neighborhood" space where children and families could relax, known as the sailing salon. Each wing of the Children's Hospital was to have a special lounge inspired by different interests. Designed to feel like the main salon of a traditional sailing yacht, the salon serves to enrich the lives of the children, as well as the families of children being cared for at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. While Sparkman & Stephens took on the design of the space, (after some gentle persuasion), the joinery was contributed by our friends at Derecktor Shipyard. It's just one of a variety of special projects we have enjoyed participating in.

Canoe Model with Decorated Paddles Mashantucket Pequot Museum Research Center
Google's Cultural Institute site has large photos of the birchbark canoe model in the collection of The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center. Dated to 1780-1820, the souvenir artwork piece features dolls, a sail and paddles along with some highly ornamented decorative paintings.

Here is the description on the page:
This model canoe with its accompanying dolls and accessories was the product of French Canadian nuns and Abenaki or Huron converts working together in a thriving cottage industry in Montreal and Quebec. Many of the items they made were sent back to Europe either as gifts to Catholic churches in France or to fill the curio cabinets of Europe’s elite.
Paddle Decoration Closeup
Similar souvenir based canoe models traced back to Quebec nuns and First Nation artisans are the model at the CMC, the Farquharson Model sold at auction in 2005, the Chartres Canoe Model and the Neuchatel model. The decorations on the paddles all give a clue to the style of paddle art being made at the time.
